A fantastic piece of British railwayana, this vintage gradient sign features the markings “1 IN 55 · 1 IN 200”, indicating changes in railway gradients.
The sign originates from the West Midlands and would originally have been positioned alongside the railway to provide gradient information to railway drivers. I haven't attributed it to a particular railway company or line, as there isn't enough provenance to do so with certainty.
The original backing board had unfortunately suffered from extensive rot and was beyond repair, so it has been carefully replaced with a new pitch pine backing board. The distinctive curved shape of the original board has been replicated, retaining the unusual character and appearance of the original sign.
Everything else remains original, including the central fixing nut and the original letters and numbers. The lettering appears to comprise a mixture of metal and possibly plastic elements, with some of the letters and numbers showing cracks and age-related wear. These imperfections are part of the history of the piece and are clearly visible in the photographs.
Now remounted and ready to hang, this is a really striking piece of railwayana that would make a wonderful feature in an industrial, country or characterful interior. Perfect for anyone who loves railway history, industrial pieces or unusual vintage signage.
Please study the photographs carefully, which show the condition of the original lettering and the newly made pitch pine backing board.
